Celebrating the meeting place of two great oceans! The Drake Passage is the body of water between the southern tip of South America, and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. The passage is approximately 1000km (600 miles) wide. To the west lies the enormous Pacific Ocean and to the East the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. The Drake Passage is known for some of the roughest seas on the planet as the water flows predominantly from west to east. This enormous flow of water forms part of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the most voluminous current in the world. The estimated rate of flow between 3,400 and 5,300 million cubic feet (95 and 150 million cubic metres) per second.
Those who have crossed the Drake Passage have a story to tell.
