Species such as the Blue whale, or penguins, are regarded as some of the most recognisable and iconic animals. There is one animal though on which millions of the oceans inhabitants depend - and is almost always overlooked. Krill are a small crustacean about 6cm (2.4”) long – about the size of a normal adult’s little finger. It’s estimated, there are roughly 400 million tonnes of Krill in the oceans. The entire Krill population has been estimated to outweigh the human population on planet Earth. A Norwegian word meaning “whale food”, Krill are the engine that powers the Antarctic ecosystem.
